Description

A silhouette is drawn on the left edge of the canvas. The human profile seems to merge with a dark landscape. A tree rises in the center, its branches stretching like veins through the composition. The forms intertwine in a play of marked contrasts.
The work rests on a sober and monochrome palette. Touches of muted colors timidly emerge from the black background. The material, worked with acrylics and mixed media techniques, brings a tactile relief to the surface.
The image evokes memory and identity. It links the individual to their land and their history. The line oscillates between figuration and abstraction to translate a complex reality.
This painting from 2015 explores cultural roots and ancestral narratives. The composition emphasizes the indissoluble link between man and nature. Each superposition of pigment reinforces the density of the visual narrative. The whole stabilizes on a fragile balance between deep darkness and the clarity of the gray background.

Tayseer Barakat, What the Tree Remembers
Palestine  • 1959

Presentation

Tayseer Barakat is one of the most influential artists in the Palestinian contemporary art scene. His work explores Palestinian history, memory, folklore, and cultural heritage. Working across painting, drawing, and installation, he often uses natural and found materials to create works that reflect his connection to Palestinian land and traditions. His earthy colours, symbolic figures, and textured surfaces bring together elements of the past and present, creating works that reflect themes of identity, loss, resilience, and belonging.

Born in 1959 in Jabaliya Refugee Camp in Gaza, Barakat studied painting at the College of Fine Arts at Helwan University in Cairo, graduating in 1983. His experience of growing up in a refugee camp has had a strong influence on his artistic practice and his interest in Palestinian history and memory. He was a founding member of the New Visions group, established during the First Intifada with artists Sliman Mansour, Nabil Anani, and Vera Tamari. Barakat currently lives and works in Ramallah, where he continues to develop his artistic practice.
