Description
Oil on cardboard
A haunting intersection of memory and matter. This oil painting captures a fragmented form through a muted, atmospheric palette. The composition focuses on a singular, sculptural mass that evokes both human anatomy and ancient stone. Ilia Menabde employs a restrained use of color, relying on cool grays and earthy ochres to define volume. Soft transitions of light create a sense of depth and stillness. The brushwork is deliberate. It suggests a slow, experimental process of layering and erasure. This approach creates a tension between the physical presence of the object and its ghostly disappearance. The image resides in a space between observation and imagination. It reflects the artist's exploration of time and inherited traditions. A sudden sliver of blue breaks the monochromatic harmony, adding a touch of modern dissonance. This detail anchors the artwork in the present while the form suggests a distant, forgotten past. The play of shadow defines the contours of a shape that refuses a definitive identity. The gaze is drawn toward the heavy, rounded summit of the structure.
Presentation
Ilia Menabde is a Georgian painter born in 2003 who lives and works in Tbilisi, Georgia. His practice explores the relationship between memory, time, place, and contemporary experience. He graduated from the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts in 2026 and currently works from a temporary studio in Tbilisi. Working primarily with oil on canvas, Menabde approaches painting as an evolving process of experimentation. His practice draws upon diverse historical periods, visual references, and the environments that surround him, which he reinterprets through a personal and contemporary language. Rather than adhering to a single stylistic approach, he continuously explores new techniques, compositions, textures, and ways of constructing the painted image. Menabde’s work reflects the perspective of a young artist navigating the tension between inherited artistic traditions and the rapidly changing visual culture of the present. His paintings combine observation, imagination, and experimentation, creating spaces in which different temporal and emotional references can coexist. He has participated in several group exhibitions in Tbilisi, and his works are held in private collections.
