Description
Oil on cardboard
This composition captures a delicate moment of stillness. A central vessel holds organic forms that gesture toward a sense of fragility. The application of paint is visceral. Bold brushstrokes create a rhythmic texture across the surface. This physical layer adds depth to the muted palette of ochre, grey, and dusty blue.
The scene evokes the tradition of vanity paintings. It explores the passage of time and the beauty of decay. There is a constant dialogue between the tangible and the ethereal. The artist utilizes ink and oil to blur the lines between a concrete object and a fading memory.
The light feels diffused and atmospheric. It wraps around the vessel in soft gradients. This approach transforms a simple arrangement into a meditative study on presence. The background merges seamlessly with the foreground. This dissolution of space suggests a dreamlike state. The artwork remains rooted in observation while drifting into pure abstraction. Every stroke reveals a commitment to experimentation and material discovery. The final image is a poetic reflection on silence and impermanence.
Presentation
Ilia Menabde is a Georgian painter born in 2003 who lives and works in Tbilisi, Georgia. His practice explores the relationship between memory, time, place, and contemporary experience. He graduated from the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts in 2026 and currently works from a temporary studio in Tbilisi. Working primarily with oil on canvas, Menabde approaches painting as an evolving process of experimentation. His practice draws upon diverse historical periods, visual references, and the environments that surround him, which he reinterprets through a personal and contemporary language. Rather than adhering to a single stylistic approach, he continuously explores new techniques, compositions, textures, and ways of constructing the painted image. Menabde’s work reflects the perspective of a young artist navigating the tension between inherited artistic traditions and the rapidly changing visual culture of the present. His paintings combine observation, imagination, and experimentation, creating spaces in which different temporal and emotional references can coexist. He has participated in several group exhibitions in Tbilisi, and his works are held in private collections.
