Description
Children's Game belongs to an early phase of Niki Neuts' practice, when painting became a field for exploring the psychological and symbolic dimensions of the human figure. The title alludes to the familiar world of childhood, yet the image resists any literal reading. What initially suggests play gradually reveals a more ambiguous emotional landscape.
The composition evokes distant echoes of the Flemish tradition, recalling Pieter Bruegel's Children's Games not through narrative but through inversion. Instead of describing children's activity, Neuts strips away anecdote to expose the fragile boundary between innocence and vulnerability. The figure appears suspended between emergence and disappearance, its contours dissolving into sweeping brushstrokes, washes of diluted pigment, and gravity-driven drips.
The painting also reflects an affinity with Northern European Expressionism, where gesture becomes a vehicle for psychological intensity rather than representation. The broad circular stroke enclosing the figure functions less as a halo than as an unstable threshold, simultaneously protecting and isolating the subject.
Already in this work, Neuts demonstrates an interest that would later define her textile practice: images are never fixed. They appear incomplete, partially erased, inviting the viewer to reconstruct meaning from fragments. Memory, identity, and narrative remain suspended, emerging only through the act of looking.

Since childhood, Niki Neuts has developed a unique perception of her discovery of life and death, which she conveys at the heart of her aesthetic exploration in a distinctive way.
The artist quickly found her mode of expression in artistic fields, leading her to study at the Institut Supérieur des Arts & Techniques de la Mode (ESMOD International) and later at the École Supérieure des Arts et Techniques Graphiques (ESTIENNE). Over the years, Niki Neuts has enriched her artistic research through drawing, painting, sculpture, and installations.
Her works are regularly exhibited and are part of private and public collections in Europe, America, and Asia.
" Her works testify to the capacity within every living being, regardless of its category, for a mutation that can be either beneficial or dangerous. Through the various figures she brings forth - human, animal, vegetal, mineral, waste - often intertwined with one another, it is above all a common story that is told, the story of their fruitful or destructive interactions.
The materials she uses reveal symbolic connections that evoke this perpetual movement of mutation between life (birth), death (the passage, memory), and rebirth (regeneration). They are fragile and sometimes ephemeral; their degradation and perpetual reuse are part of her creative process, which, in itself, constitutes a possible way of preserving the invisible balances of life that she tirelessly seeks to bring to the surface in the realm of perception, of a 'shared consciousness.' "
