Description
In this work by Gonçalo Mar — the Portuguese artist internationally known for his graphic and surreal style, often exploring themes of social criticism, popular culture and symbolism — three anthropomorphised bulls ride a wave like surfers.
Bulls, traditionally associated with strength, power and determination, are placed here in an unusual and dynamic context: surfing. This creates a reflection on the control of natural or social forces. Deeply rooted in Portuguese and Spanish culture, particularly through the tradition of bullfighting, the bull is reinterpreted by Mar from a contemporary perspective, depicting a scene in which the bulls are “tamed" by the wave rather than by humans.Â
The surreal nature of the painting introduces an element of irony, and perhaps criticism, towards a culture that often encourages individuals to perform and turn every context into a spectacle. At the same time, the scene can be read as a metaphor for contemporary society, in which powerful forces such as the economy, nature and social pressures must somehow be “tamed" in order to avoid being overwhelmed by them.
By using visually striking elements that immediately attract the viewer, Mar ultimately invites us to look beyond the surface and reflect on deeper questions about society, power and human behaviour.
The artwork is currently mounted on a stretcher, but it will be shipped unstretched and rolled inside a tube.
Presentation
Gonçalo Mar (Lisbon, 1974) is one of the most prominent figures in contemporary Portuguese street art. Active since the late 1990s, he has developed a distinctive visual language that blends graffiti, comics, animation and influences from Japanese culture, creating an imaginative world populated by hybrid and visionary figures.
Trained in fashion design and with professional experience in animation, he has expanded his artistic practice from the street to canvas and installation, while maintaining a strong focus on drawing, composition and visual storytelling.
Characterised by vibrant colours and atmospheres suspended between dream and reality, his works can now be found in public spaces, museums and international collections, contributing to the identity and evolution of contemporary Portuguese urban art.
