Description
In this 2021 work, Pau Escat constructs a vertical composition from two contrasting fields of near-black and gold. A horizontal transition separates the two areas, suggesting the structure of a landscape while remaining firmly within abstraction.
Executed in mixed media on cotton canvas, the painting reveals a tactile surface of visible brushwork and irregular marks. Its metallic lower field changes subtly according to the surrounding light, an effect closely connected to Escat's longstanding interest in the relationship between light and material.
Nature and jewelry are fundamental references within the Barcelona artist's practice. Escat trained and worked as a jeweler, developing a particular understanding of materials, textures, reflective surfaces, and light.
His paintings translate these concerns into abstract compositions that evoke landscapes and atmospheric phenomena without representing specific places.
