Description

Two Faces, One Memory explores the fragile relationship between memory, identity, and emotional connection. Two monochromatic faces emerge from a shifting field of grey, their features partially dissolving into expressive marks as if seen through the haze of time. Although the faces remain distinct, they appear to share the same emotional space, suggesting two people connected by a memory that belongs to both of them.Across the canvas, sweeping fluorescent strokes of pink, magenta, and touches of yellow move around and through the figures. These vivid gestures contrast sharply with the restrained monochromatic faces, becoming more than colour - they represent the emotional intensity that survives even when the details of a memory begin to fade. The energetic marks seem to hold the faces together while simultaneously breaking them apart, creating a tension between remembering and forgetting, presence and disappearance. The partially erased features are central to the artist's visual language. Rather than defining the figures with precise contours, Mona Omar allows them to emerge and dissolve within the surface, reflecting her interest in the way emotional memories change over time. What remains is not necessarily a perfect image of a person or a moment, but the feeling associated with it.The work will particularly appeal to collectors interested in contemporary figurative painting, emotional memory, human relationships, and expressive mixed-media techniques. Its dramatic contrast between monochrome imagery and vivid fluorescent colour makes it especially suited to contemporary, minimalist, modern, or creative interiors, where it can function as a strong focal point and introduce both movement and emotional depth. Two Faces, One Memory is executed in acrylic and pastel on canvas, measuring 104 x 70 cm. The artwork will be carefully rolled and shipped in a protective tube.

Presentation

Mona Omar Abdel-Aziz Hassan (b. 1989, Egypt) is a contemporary Egyptian artist, researcher, and lecturer whose figurative practice explores the emotional memory of human experience. Rather than depicting memories as fixed records of the past, she investigates how they evolve over time - fading, fragmenting, and quietly reshaping themselves through emotion.

Her distinctive visual language is characterised by monochromatic figurative painting inspired by vintage cinema and family photographs, interrupted by luminous fluorescent forms that cut through the image like emotional echoes. Figures gradually dissolve into expressive brushstrokes, their features suspended between appearance and disappearance, suggesting that memory is never preserved intact but continuously reconstructed. These fluorescent interventions become visual metaphors for hope, resilience, and the emotional intensity with which certain moments continue to exist long after they have passed.

Rather than documenting personal narratives, Mona transforms familiar scenes into universal reflections on love, motherhood, nostalgia, and human connection. The dialogue between dissolving forms and vibrant colour creates paintings that exist between reality and remembrance, where absence becomes as meaningful as presence.

Working across acrylic, oil, watercolor, and mixed media, she combines expressive painterly gestures with carefully structured compositions, creating works that are both emotionally intimate and visually striking.

Mona graduated with Honors from the Faculty of Applied Arts, Helwan University (now Capital University), in 2011, specialising in Ornamentation. She earned her Master's degree in Applied Arts in 2018 and completed her PhD in 2023. She is currently a lecturer at the Faculty of Applied Arts, Badr University in Cairo. Alongside her academic career, she has participated in numerous workshops and group exhibitions in Egypt and internationally, continuously expanding her dialogue between artistic research and contemporary painting.

Through her work, Mona Omar invites viewers to recognise fragments of their own emotional histories, revealing that memory is not a place we return to, but something we continually recreate.
