Description
A generous silhouette dominates the center of the canvas. The body, with accentuated curves, adopts a supple posture. The artist plays with volumes here to create an affirmed physical presence. A marked contrast opposes the deep blue of the dress to the whiteness of the top.
The character blows into a flute, turned towards nature. At the top of a tree, two white birds seem to be listening to the melody. The landscape unfolds in the background with bluish hills and rounded trees.
This oil painting, created in 2003, explores serenity and music. The style favors simplified and accessible forms. The colors are straightforward, bringing immediate clarity to the scene. The paved ground of ochre stones anchors the composition in a stable space. A field of orange flowers punctuates the green expanse. The whole rests on a balance between the mass of the body and the lightness of the sky.
Presentation
Jean-Louis Toutain was a French sculptor, born in Toulouse in 1948.
Since his childhood, Jean-Louis Toutain wanted to be in touch with the material and rethink the world.
After Beaux-Arts Jean-Louis turned towards several artistic practices but didn't find his true calling. It was only in 1987, he decided to devote himself to sculpture exclusively.
He was inspired by well known artists like Niki de Saint-Phalle and Fernando Botero.
Jean-Louis employs simple patterns so that he can reach out to a wide number of people. Far from being pretentious, his creations are his own reflection, humble and easily accessible by children and adults.
Jean-Louis Toutain's work has been presented in several solo and group exhibitions, in various French art galleries. The artist was awarded many times during his long career. Jean-Louis Toutain died in 2008.
