Description
Graphite pencil · 29.7 × 21 cm
Azhar Mehmood presents Charlie Chaplin through a direct, expressive portrait, concentrating attention on the face beneath the distinctive bowler hat.
Wide eyes and raised eyebrows give the figure an animated presence. The small moustache and subtly compressed lips introduce a quieter counterpoint, allowing the expression to suggest surprise, uncertainty or a moment of reflection.
Working in graphite, Mehmood develops the image through a range of greys and dense dark passages. Light across the forehead, nose and cheek gives the face volume, while closer marks articulate the hair and facial details.
The hat provides a strong upper silhouette. Its curved brim frames the forehead, contrasting with the sharper diagonals of the jacket and tie below. These relationships give the composition clarity while sustaining its focus on expression.
At A4 scale, the drawing encourages an intimate encounter. Individual strokes remain visible, revealing how repeated marks contribute to the broader tonal structure.
brings together two important aspects of Mehmood’s practice: detailed observation and an interest in the emotional possibilities of portraiture.

Presentation
Azhar Mehmood is a Pakistani visual artist working across hyperrealistic portraiture, pencil drawing, landscape painting and Arabic calligraphy. He began making art in childhood and has developed his practice over fourteen years.
His artistic interests centre on human expression, nature and cultural heritage. Through portraiture and drawing, he explores the descriptive possibilities of line, tone and closely observed detail. His landscapes provide a complementary space for engaging with natural forms and atmosphere.
In his Arabic calligraphy, Mehmood brings written language into dialogue with visual structure. Faith and spirituality inform this aspect of his practice, alongside an appreciation of the ornamental and compositional traditions of Islamic art.
Mehmood is also developing a body of abstract work, expanding his approach towards more intuitive expressions of emotion and responses to nature. His practice continues to evolve through the exchange between representational precision, calligraphic form and creative experimentation.
