Description
This artwork is a striking piece that embraces a minimalist yet impactful approach to portraiture. Executed with bold, sweeping brushstrokes using an unassuming palette of black and red against a white backdrop, it commands attention through its simplicity. The subject of the painting is rendered in an intentionally rudimentary style, reminiscent of childlike innocence but imbued with a sophisticated and deliberate execution. The face is outlined with confident, thick black lines that effortlessly convey the contours of the head, eyes, nose, and mouth. With the addition of red accents, the artist introduces a dynamic element, highlighting certain features and adding depth. The red seems to pulse with vitality, suggesting life and emotion beneath the seemingly simplistic surface. What sets this artwork apart is its ability to evoke a sense of familiarity and warmth. The oversized, hollow eyes and the broad, smiling mouth create an inviting and approachable figure, encouraging the viewer to reflect on the universality of human expression. The inclusion of smaller, nondescript shapes in the upper right corner adds an intriguing layer of abstraction, prompting further contemplation about their symbolic or compositional role. The use of negative space and the absence of intricate detail focus the viewer's attention squarely on the essential elements of the portrait. This stylistic choice not only emphasizes the raw emotional honesty of the artwork but also showcases the artist's adeptness at conveying complex sentiments through the most minimalistic means. In conclusion, this painting is a masterful blend of simplicity and depth, capturing the essence of human expression with an engaging and almost whimsical authenticity. It stands as a testament to the power of minimalist art, where every stroke and color choice serves a purpose, creating a visually compelling and emotionally resonant piece.
Presentation
My name is Michael R. Grine and I am an process oriented artist. I use a combination of found objects, acrylic paints, and aerosol paints to create abstract patterns on wood and canvas.
Statement
Curiosity. Emotion. Experimentation. Exploration. Leap of faith. Pursuit of knowledge. These words only begin to describe what my art signifies or represents. I was born an artist and have always identified myself as an artist. I possess an insatiable creative drive to make art out of the images I see in my mind. To help satisfy this impulse, I am always exploring new places and trying new things. Having freedom of expression and not being limited to one style or technique of making art are paramount to my identity as an artist. I love the many different processes of making art and experimenting with new ways of creating art.
My inspiration stems from color, music, literature, and the excitement about the unknown possibilities of taking everyday objects and using them in a way that differs from what the manufacturer intended. I use a combination of found objects, acrylic paints, and aerosol paints to create abstract patterns on wood and canvas. Some of my methods include combining different chemicals and paint on paper or in plastic or wood box frames to distort vivid colors that are mixed or thrown right on the canvas. The result is the distortion of lines and contours, and layers of translucent or opaque paints on the canvas or in random patterns.
