Description
From the series "The Broken Planet" Edition of 9 + 2AP More sizes & Editions: Small size: 20 in H x 20 in W. Edition of 25 + 2 AP.
This striking artwork presents a spherical composition crafted from intricately arranged shards of glass. A vivid array of colors—red, green, yellow, and silver—creates a visually arresting mosaic that captivates the viewer with its dynamic interplay of light and reflection. The shattered pieces, meticulously positioned, form a chaotic yet cohesive structure, evoking themes of fragility and transformation. The contrasting hues and textures enhance the sphere's depth, suggesting an inner luminosity that draws the eye inward. The dark background accentuates the vibrant colors, making the artwork appear as if suspended in space. This piece challenges perceptions of beauty and destruction, compelling a closer examination of the intricate details and the inherent disorder within. Its bold use of color and form embodies a powerful statement on the complexity of visual experiences.
In my series called “Broken Planet," I am showing one Broken Planet with 13 other “planets” based on the most common human feelings or behavior such as happiness, sadness, anger, anticipation, fear, loneliness, jealousy, disgust, trust, greed, joy, racism, shame. In these images, I am working with various shreds of colored glass and other detritus which I picked up on the streets near my home in Atlanta, during the period of COVID-19 quarantine and the political protests. I assemble these pieces in the studio and rephotograph them to symbolize the current crisis of political and environmental issues. At this moment, the most pressing questions of our time are about ourselves and the future of our culture and our planet. In a sense, I am taking the pieces and putting them back together to re-construct a fragmented world. “The world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don’t do anything about it.” -Albert Einstein
This artwork displays a captivating, spherical compilation of shattered glass, featuring a dynamic array of colors—predominantly vivid reds, greens, and yellows. The piece is strikingly set against a stark black background, which amplifies its brilliance and complexity. The irregular fragments are meticulously arranged, creating a visually compelling interplay of transparency and opacity. Each shard reflects light differently, producing an ever-changing spectacle as the viewer’s perspective shifts. The chaotic yet cohesive configuration suggests themes of fragmentation and unity, evoking a sense of both destruction and creation. This unique composition challenges the viewer to engage with the dichotomy of chaos within order, transforming everyday glass into a mesmerizing, thought-provoking piece of art.
