Description
To construct his major book, Leviathan, the English philosopher Thomas Hobbes starts from this observation: “Man is a wolf to man. » In his pessimistic conception of the social contract, he explains that the human being, by essence dominant, has only agreed to live in society, with all the laws and prohibitions that this implies, to ensure his security, by renouncing to its natural freedom and transferring power to a third party, this famous Leviathan, which is none other than the State incarnate. Without him, our life would be “solitary, destitute, disgusting, animal and brief".
But this animal side sometimes resurfaces without our knowledge, despite the shackles of conventions that our species has imposed on itself. This bestial facet appears in these images with the framework of an aristocracy whose dominant males, constantly challenged to show their omnipotence by seducing female prey, end up showing their true face, that of wild beasts always ready to pounce on their willing victims, revealing all their assets to better be devoured.
Presentation
Malo, born in 1972, is a French artist photographer whose work explores the concept of the mask that we present in society. Through elaborate photographic series, Malo creates important settings, often in castles or sets that he constructs in the studio.
To create his works, Malo puts together a team like a small film production, comprising around twenty people: makeup artists, hairdressers, stylists, decorators, models and assistants. He oversees every aspect of production, from staging to model direction to lighting, with the goal of telling a story through his photographs.
Inspired by Montaigne's adage "Know thyself", Malo explores the duality of the human being, highlighting the gap between the image we project and our true identity.
His work has been exhibited for over a decade in Europe, both in art galleries and international art fairs, as well as in the United States. Through his images, Malo invites the viewer to reflect on our own identity and on the masks we wear on a daily basis to navigate the world around us.
