Description
This black-and-white photograph captures a Spanish Army CH-47 Chinook helicopter hovering mid-operation during the aftermath of the 2024 DANA floods in Chiva, Spain. Suspended beneath the aircraft, a damaged vehicle is lifted from the devastated terrain, emphasizing the scale of destruction and the precision of the rescue effort.
The stark landscape below—scarred by water and mud—contrasts with the mechanical force of the helicopter, while the play of light and shadow enhances the image’s depth and tension. Part of , Emanuel Gravina’s solo exhibition presented from September to November 2024 on the one-year anniversary of the disaster, the photograph transforms a moment of emergency response into a lasting visual reflection on loss, resilience, and collective recovery.
Presentation
Emanuel Gravina (Argentina, 1985), based in Valencia, Spain. His practice explores humanity and territory through direct engagement with communities often placed at the margins, addressing themes such as homelessness, displacement and rural life within contexts marked by social or environmental challenges. Focused on resilience as a shared human condition, he works across photography, painting and other media without hierarchy, developing projects grounded in real connection, service and presence.
