Description
This monochromatic artwork masterfully captures a minimalist winter scene, dominated by an undulating snow-covered landscape in Patchwork Road, Biei (Hokkaido/Japan). A simple fence, thin and stark, stretches across the upper third of the image, its linear form a striking contrast against the soft, contoured waves of snow beneath. The fence disappears into the horizon, adding a sense of infinity and isolation.
The sky overhead is a deep, uniform gray, enhancing the bleak yet serene atmosphere. The piece is distinguished by its use of light and shadow; subtle gradients on the snow create depth and movement, while the sharpness of the fence anchors the scene. The composition’s simplicity belies its emotional impact, evoking feelings of solitude and tranquility.
The choice of black and white amplifies the timeless quality, allowing the viewer to focus on form and texture. This artwork stands out for its elegant austerity and profound expressive power.
Presentation
Humberto Lemos has been a photographer for 40 years, with his current production essentially focused on authoral photographs. His works invite us to contemplate landscapes that seems to be from other worlds. Images that remind us of how little we are, where emptiness and silence are exalted as protagonists in the absence of human elements.
Based in Portugal, Humberto travels searching photographs without addresses - he created the concept of Imaginary Landscapes, deconstructing places and their referents, producing images that come out of the obvious geographic expectations. He works with minimalism on oriental influences.
