Description

Contemporary Art: (2021) by Christo.

Archival pigment print on Ilford Galerie Smooth Pearl paper. Numbered and signed by project photographer Wolfgang Volz. Edition of 250.

Christo and Jeanne-Claude are best known for wrapping famous buildings around the globe. Their final project, L'Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped was a site-specific and once-in-lifetime experience that ravished the eyes and impressed an indelible image on the memories of everyone who saw it.

In 1961, L'Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped was one the first public art projects that Christo conceptualised after he arrived in Paris. It remained as only a dream for 60 years until Christo and Jeanne-Claude's latest project finally came to life. For 16 days (from 18th September until 3rd October 2021), the iconic 50-meter high triumph arch, commissioned by French ruler Napoléon Bonaparte following his victory at the Battle of Austerlitz in 1806, was wrapped in 25,000 square meters of recyclable silvery blue polypropylene fabric and 3,000 meters of red rope. As part of the installation, the large Place Charles de Gaulle road junction that surrounded the monument was temporarily pedestrianised to allow people to see the installation and touch it freely. 6 million viewers journeyed to the Place de l'Étoile to experience the most exceptional art installation of 2021. Due to Christo's unfortunate passing in 2020, Christo and Jeanne-Claude's “life-long dream" installation was carried out by his team along with the Centre des Monument Nationaux, Center Pompidou and the City of Paris.

Presentation

Christo Vladimirov Javacheff was born in Bulgaria and studied fine arts in Sofia and Vienna before moving to Paris in 1958. There he met Jeanne-Claude, who became his muse and partner in exotic art. They married in 1962, moved to New York in 1964 and began making the ever-larger "environmental" artworks for which Christo became famous: wrapped fountains, bridges, buildings, and other public spaces.

Working with his wife and creative partner, Jeanne-Claude (Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon), he created some of the most spectacular large-scale artworks of the 20th century. They wrapped in fabric the Reichstag building in Berlin (1995) and the Pont Neuf bridge in Paris (1985), built a 25-mile fabric fence across Northern California (1975), and strung a huge orange curtain across a Colorado Valley (1972).

Their career (to date) culminated with "The Gates," which placed 7500 vinyl gates, with free-flowing orange nylon fabric panels, across 23 miles of Central Park walkways for 16 days in 2005.

Jeanne-Claude passed away on November 18, 2009 in New York.

Christo passed on May 31, 2020 in New York.
