About the Artist: Yaacov Agam (Israeli, born 1928) is best known for his pioneering of Kinetic Art. Employing light and sound to provide a unique sensorial experience for the viewer, Agam melded formalism and mysticism. His lenticular prints, or Agamographs, made illusory images appear depending on the audience's viewpoint. “My intention was to create a work of art which would transcend the visible, which cannot be perceived except in stages, with the understanding that it is a partial revelation and not the perpetuation of the existing," he explained of his work. “My aim is to show what can be seen within the limits of possibility which exists in the midst of coming into being." Born Yaacov Gipstein on May 11, 1928 in Rish-le-Zion, Palestine (now Israel), Agam studied in Jerusalem, Zürich, and Paris. While attending Zürich's Kunstgewerbe Schule, Agam studied under the renowned color theorist Johannes Itten, before moving to Paris in 1951. Agam has gone on to become the subject of retrospectives at the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris in 1972, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York in 1980. The artist currently lives and works in Paris, France. His works are included in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, among others.
Presentation
Yaacov Agam, born in 1928, is a globally renowned Israeli artist famous for his work in kinetic art. Agam is celebrated for his works that explore movement and the interaction between the viewer and the artwork, a concept he refers to as the "fourth dimension". Through his sculptures, paintings, and installations, Agam invites viewers to experience a unique artistic journey, highlighting geometric illusions and movement.
Yaacov Agam's art is particularly known for his limited edition pieces, such as his abstract and geometric creations, which play with light and color effects to create fascinating visual illusions. His works have been exhibited in the world's leading museums, including the Georges Pompidou Museum in Paris, where his kinetic art creations have been admired by a large audience. Famous pieces like "Untitled" or "Yellow Haze" showcase his talent for creating dynamic and vibrant effects that change depending on the viewing angle.
Yaacov Agam's kinetic sculpture transforms space into a constant movement, and his artistic vision focuses on interactivity, dynamism, and the participation of the public. He is one of the pioneers of the kinetic art movement, which strives to bring static art to life. Works like the "Kiddush Cup" or "Rainbow" are emblematic of his abstract art and his ability to reveal new dimensions in his creations.
Among his influences are figures like Victor Vasarely, Fernand Léger, and Bridget Riley, but Yaacov Agam's mark remains unparalleled in the field of interactive visual art. His early exhibitions in Paris, Tel-Aviv, and New York were a great success, solidifying his place among the leading artists in the world of modern and kinetic art.
Today, the artist continues to evolve his creations, exploring new techniques and formats. His abstract art studio and limited edition works continue to fascinate art lovers worldwide. Yaacov Agam's work remains an essential reference in the art world, a living testament to the fusion of movement, illusion, and kinetic art.
