About the Artist: Julian Opie (British, born 1958) is a contemporary artist known for his distinctive depictions of figures, portraits, and landscapes. The highly stylized treatment Opie gives his subjects—whereby features are created by thick black outlines and filled in with solid areas of flat color—is a blend of Pop Art and Minimalism with a wholly contemporary sensibility. “The process of reading things as simulations but knowing at the same time that they are real is quite central to my work," Opie has observed of his own art. Born in 1958 in London, United Kingdom, Opie studied with Michael-Craig Martin at Goldsmiths in London during the early 1980s. His earliest works consisted of painted steel sculptures exploring the relationship between visual and spatial observation. He is part of the group know as New British Sculpture, alongside artists such as Anish Kapoor and Tony Cragg. Over time, the artist has expanded his practice to include painting, installation, and cover art for albums. The artist's works are part of the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and others. Opie currently lives and works in his hometown of London, United Kingdom.
Presentation
Julian Opie, born in 1958 in London, is a British contemporary artist. His studio is located in London's Shoreditch district.
Julian Opie grew up in Oxford. He studied at the Dragon School and Magdalen College School, Oxford, and later graduated from Goldsmiths College. His early success with galleries inspired younger artists like Damien Hirst to follow in his footsteps.
His work, inspired in part by Patrick Caulfield and Michael Craig-Martin , involves the reduction (by computer) of photographs into figurative reproductions. In his portraits , the face is characterized by broad black lines, flat areas of color and minimal details, reducing the eye to the black circle of the pupil.
His series "Imagine You Are…" shows how activities like driving, walking, or climbing can be represented through simple reductions. Opie also uses sculptures and light installations to present everyday objects.
The public was introduced to Julian Opie's style in 2000 through his cover for Blur's Best of album, or during the Vertigo world tour of the Irish rock band U2, for which he created visuals of walking characters, projected onto the giant screens on stage.
