Presentation
Lady Pink, whose real name is Sandra Fabara, is an Ecuadorian-American graffiti artist and muralist born in 1964 in Ambato, Ecuador. She emigrated to New York City at the age of seven and grew up in Queens. In 1979, at just 15, she began painting in the New York subway, quickly becoming one of the few women to make a name for herself in the male-dominated graffiti scene. She joined collectives such as TC5 (The Cool 5) and TPA (The Public Animals), and in 1980 founded the group Ladies of the Arts to promote the place of women in street art.
A graduate of Manhattan's High School of Art and Design, where she majored in architecture , Lady Pink developed a unique style that blended surrealism , urban landscapes, and feminist symbolism. In 1982, she starred in the cult film Wild Style, helping to popularize hip-hop and graffiti art worldwide.
At the age of 21, Lady Pink organized her first solo exhibition, “Femmes-Fatales”, at the Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia. This exhibition marked an important step in the recognition of her work beyond the New York graffiti scene. Since then, her works have been presented in numerous international institutions, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum and the Groninger Museum in the Netherlands. Her career reflects the evolution of graffiti from an underground street practice into a recognized form of contemporary art embraced by major institutions.
Through her murals, paintings and drawings, Lady Pink has developed an artistic language where urban culture, surrealism, architecture and the representation of the female figure come together. Her compositions often depict powerful women evolving within imaginary urban landscapes, reflecting her interest in identity, empowerment and the role of women in public spaces. Her work combines the energy of graffiti with a narrative and symbolic approach, making her a major figure in feminist street art.
Her practice also includes a strong commitment to education and artistic transmission. For many years, Lady Pink has taken part in educational programs, workshops and community mural projects, particularly with young artists. Through these initiatives, she contributes to preserving the history of New York graffiti while encouraging new generations to explore urban art practices.
Today, based in the Hudson Valley, Lady Pink continues her artistic practice between graffiti, mural painting and urban contemporary art. A pioneer of the graffiti movement and one of the first women to gain international recognition in this field, she holds an essential place in the history of street art, with a body of work combining activism, cultural identity and creative freedom.
