To celebrate his new monograph with JRP|Editions, André Butzer—one of the most accomplished painters of his generation—has created an exclusive lithography in seven radiant colors.
Surrounded by Mediterranean fruits, Butzer's iconic figure of the Woman is the center of attention. With her radiant smile and cheerful serenity she appears amidst a bright red field of color as if fully dwelling in her own possibilities.
From the outset, Butzer has merged European expressionism (Matisse) with the conceptual seriality of postwar American art (Warhol). For him, “paintings are localizations of the greatest despair and the greatest hope," and this is exactly why “they come closest to the very joy and aid we are in dire need of."
In almost hopeless times, André Butzer's Untitled, 2026, offers solace and, with delicate echoes of Modigliani, Balthus, and Morandi, the lithography is most humanly sincere in its genuine presence, embodying joy and affection, shyness as much as confidence, and benevolence.
