“Burning Silence" — 50 × 65 cm (19.7 × 25.6 inches) — is a contemporary figurative portrait by French artist Natalya Mougenot, part of her ongoing series exploring the depth of human presence beyond identity. Rendered in an expressive, intuitive style, the painting presents a universal figure — neither distinctly male nor female — embodying a quiet yet intense inner world.

Set against a deep, saturated red background, the face emerges with a striking stillness. The warm, peach-toned skin contrasts with bold, gestural strokes of electric blue, green, and yellow that define the hair and facial contours. The features are simplified yet deliberate: elongated nose, heavy-lidded eyes, and a closed mouth that seems to hold back unspoken words. The gaze is distant, introspective, almost suspended between thought and silence.

The vibrant, almost restless brushstrokes surrounding the head create a sense of internal movement — as if emotions are circulating beneath the surface, searching for release. This tension between the calm expression and the energetic color application gives the work its emotional charge. The silence here is not empty; it burns quietly, filled with thoughts, feelings, or truths that remain unexpressed — whether by choice or by impossibility.

Natalya Mougenot explores in this piece the idea of a shared human condition: that moment when something deeply felt cannot find its voice. By removing clear markers of gender, she invites the viewer to project themselves into the figure, transforming the portrait into a mirror of inner experience. “Burning Silence" becomes not just a depiction of a person, but a state of being — universal, intimate, and profoundly human.

Central to Natalya's practice is a deep commitment to authenticity and honesty in art. Her brushstrokes remain intentionally visible, revealing the hand of the artist at work — spontaneous, imperfect, and alive. In a time when many images are generated digitally or by artificial intelligence, this visible gesture becomes an act of resistance. It affirms the presence of a human being behind the work, with emotions, intuition, and lived experience. Each stroke carries a trace of that humanity, making the painting not only an image, but a direct, physical expression of truth.

This insistence on the handmade gives “Burning Silence" a powerful, tactile presence. The viewer is not only invited to see the painting, but to feel the process behind it — to recognize the rhythm of the hand, the immediacy of the gesture, and the honesty embedded in every mark.

In “Burning Silence," silence is not absence — it is presence. A presence charged with emotion, restraint, and quiet power. The painting invites the viewer to pause and listen to what is not said, to feel what exists beneath the surface, and to recognize in that stillness a reflection of their own unspoken depths.

Presentation

Natalya is a contemporary  french artist living in Lyon.

She was born and grew up in Kazakhstan, the country known for its spacious steppes.

She arrived in France 2003. Since that moment she loves her adoptive country.

She started painting in 2017 and used it as a therapeutic and emotional release during times of crisis. She incorporates this therapeutic approach in her artistic creative process till now.

In her artistic practice she refers to the terms of metamodernism,  which proposes to look at the world from the position of the inner adult.

As an artist and as a woman  she translates the experience of her personal search for balance based on harmony between mind, soul and body. This balance, in her opinion,  is the pillar for the inner adult.

Important components of her work are authenticity, soulfulness, sincerity, emotionality and honesty. She immerses the objects and the characters in the world where there is no falsity, rudeness, loneliness and indifference.

She works  rapidly  and is constantly sensitive  to the details.

Her artistic process is a fine balance between a pre-meditation and spontantainty which helps her to create her expressive atmospheric artworks with a modern touch of impressionism by cultivating a naive art approach.
