Description

"No Title 4" (2016) is a compelling lithograph by the internationally acclaimed Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota (鹽田千春). Renowned for her monumental, immersive room installations woven from thousands of red or black threads, Shiota translates her signature obsession with memory, anxiety, and the unseen webs of human connection onto paper in this striking graphic work.

In this print, a solitary, black silhouetted figure sits isolated at a desk, completely engulfed by a torrential, swirling vortex of scattered papers and frantic lines. While the dense, chaotic hatching mirrors the dense yarn-weaving found in her famous installations like The Soul Trembles or In Silence, this particular piece strips away color to harness the raw, psychological intensity of monochrome linework. The sheets of paper—recurring motifs in her practice that represent stored memory, lost history, and silent communication—become a suffocating, atmospheric cloud that traps the subject. Rather than a simple depiction of work-related stress, the artwork serves as a deeply poetic visual metaphor for "presence in absence," evoking the heavy, universal burdens of the human mind, internal isolation, and the invisible ties that lock our thoughts inside our own private spaces.

Presentation

Born in 1972 in the Japanese city of Osaka, Chiharu Shiota has been living and working in Berlin since 1997. She studied at the Berlin University of Fine Arts then the Hamburg University of Fine Arts and worked at Rebecca Horn's studio and with Marina Abramovic. Her artistic language has been influenced by artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Eva Hesse and Ana Mendieta, both in terms of physical experimentation and an exploration of the unconscious, and with the choice of delicate materials like fabrics and thread, traditionally associated with femininity. Shiota's radical and protean artistic approach explores the notions of the body, temporality, movement, memory and dreams. Her site-specific installations are often the theatre for performances designed by the artist and involving the mental and bodily participation of the viewer.
