Description
Dated 1974 and issued in an edition of seventy-five copies, SE-3 belongs to the graphic production of Eusebio Sempere (1923-1985), the artist from Onil in Alicante who brought kinetic and optical abstraction into Spanish art with a precision no contemporary matched. Sempere spent the 1950s in Paris, where the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles and the example of Vasarely confirmed his direction, and returned to Spain in 1960 to develop the systematic work of parallel lines, graded chromatic progressions and modulated light for which he is known. Printmaking and serigraphy suited that programme exactly, since the medium permits the flawless registration of ruled fields that the hand cannot achieve. The alphanumeric title, following the artist's habitual practice, identifies the sheet within a numbered sequence and withholds any figurative reading. The sheet measures 76 by 56 centimetres. Sempere received the Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas in 1983; the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Alicante holds the collection he donated to his native province.
Presentation
Sempere was born in Onil, Alicante, Spain. He began his studies at the School of Fine Arts of San Carlos de Valencia where he studied painting, drawing and various etching techniques. Due to a childhood disease, he had almost no vision in his right eye.
Sempere's work is defined by the abstraction of its elements, geometric repetition and linearity, all of which evolved into his synthesis of Op Art and constructivism with elements of kinetic art.
His personal contribution to the development of kinetic art is a series of abstract geometric constructions that demonstrate the perceptual effects of optical vibration and the illusion of motion. Light also plays an important role in his artistic work. Perhaps influenced by Levantine sources, Sempere uses it as the main element to organize his creations harmoniously. His paintings are considered as two-dimensional surfaces where the artist plays with visual elements—the light, the colors and tones—using perceptual and optical effects to create suggestive forms in repeating geometric shapes.
