Description
Dated 1978 and issued in an edition of seventy-five copies, this large sheet belongs to the graphic work of Jorge Castillo, born in Pontevedra in 1933 and formed largely outside Spain, in Buenos Aires, Geneva, Madrid, Berlin and New York. Castillo's drawing is the foundation of everything he makes: a nervous, insistent line that constructs figures, interiors and still lifes with a precision that keeps tipping into the hallucinatory, so that his work has been placed near a Central European fantastic tradition rather than within any Spanish school. The adjective recortada, cut out or silhouetted, points to a figure detached from its ground and treated as a shape, a device he used to unsettle the reading of pictorial space. The vertical sheet measures 100 by 70 centimetres. Castillo was awarded a DAAD fellowship in Berlin in 1972, and his work is held by the Museo Reina Sofía and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Jorge José Castillo Casalderrey (born June 16, 1933) is a Spanish-born painter and sculptor. For most of his childhood, he and his family lived in Argentina. Since 1962, he has maintained residences in both Barcelona and New York City.
Jorge Castillo greatly admired Pablo Picasso, and that influence shows in his paintings, etchings, and lithographs. His steel sculpture Homage to the Cyclist stands in the Plaça de Sants in Barcelona.
