aquagravure Print for Sale
Aquagravure combines a carved matrix and handmade paper production in a single step. The artist sculpts or engraves a design into a base such as wood, wax, or metal, then applies wet paper pulp into the mold. Pigments may be added before pressing, integrating color and texture during creation. Once dried, the image emerges in relief, giving the work a tactile quality and unique visual depth. Developed in the late 1980s, the technique offers a result halfway between printmaking and sculpture. On Artsper, the aquagravure category brings together works that make use of this unique potential, whether abstract or figurative.
The process allows infinite variations: sharp contrasts between smooth and recessed areas, textures enhanced by light, or subtle shades embedded into the paper's fibers. Collectors value these works for their combination of technical uniqueness and material durability. Among the artists featured are Bram Bogart, Corneille, Robert Combas, and Tony Soulié, whose aquagravures reflect the creative diversity enabled by this medium.
