Etching is an printing technique from the Middle Ages that enables the exact reproduction of precise drawings. The process is a chemical one: the artist draws their design on a copper plate covered in an acid-resistant ground, sometimes using tracing paper. Scraping along the lines of the design with a metal point removes this ground. The plate is then immersed in acid, which bites the bare copper, inscribing the design on the surface. It's ready for printing! Ink is applied, which runs into the crevices, before being placed against a sheet of paper and passed through a printing press. The entire process can be repeated infinitely, which is why etching prints are more affordable than paintings.
