Etching is an printing technique from the Middle Ages that enables the exact reproduction of precise drawings. The process is a chemical one: the artist draws their design on a copper plate covered in an acid-resistant ground, sometimes using tracing paper. Scraping along the lines of the design with a metal point removes this ground. The plate is then immersed in acid, which bites the bare copper, inscribing the design on the surface.
