Skulz is a sculptural artwork by the artist Malaspina, exploring the boundary between material, illusion, and perception. At first glance minimalist, the piece gradually reveals a skull in relief, emerging from a surface composed of simple, repetitive elements.
The sculpture is created using 1,500 bamboo pins, carefully selected and placed side by side. Through a subtle interplay of density, depth, and volume, these cylindrical elements shape the hollows and protrusions of the skull, giving rise to a powerful and instantly recognizable image. Bamboo, a natural and organic material, contrasts with the universal symbolism of the skull, creating a tension between fragility, permanence, and mortality.
The work is framed in a mahogany frame, whose warmth and noble character enhance the precious nature of the piece while anchoring the composition in an aesthetic that is both contemporary and timeless. The frame acts as a boundary between object and viewer, transforming the sculpture into a wall-mounted icon.
With Skulz, Malaspina offers a reflection on image construction, the repetition of gesture, and the way accumulation can generate a form rich in meaning. The artwork invites the viewer to move closer to observe the material, then step back to allow the figure to emerge—creating a constant dialogue between detail and overall perception.
