Description
A summary of informal power, an intimate circle is determined empirically by the inability of outsiders to penetrate the circle and the direct access of insiders to the center of power via a private entrance, an elevator, or a telephone. Insiders exclude others, filter information and monitor each other. We cannot trust others, we cannot turn our backs on the rest. The leader's position is ambivalent: should he lead the group (i.e. turn his back and trust the team to follow) or should he follow the group to ensure that all are worthy of trust ? Advancing one's agenda while locked into agreements and obligations, inside and outside the circle, is the challenge. The paradox of informal power is that the leader is the keystone of the System but also its hostage.
Presentation
Alena Ledeneva is Professor of Political Science and Sociology at University College London and founder of the Global Informality Project (in-formality.com), currently in writing residency at the Institute of Advanced Studies of Paris (IEA-Paris ). A graduate of Novosibirsk State University and the University of Cambridge (Newnham), she is the author of the trilogy: Russia's Economy of Favors (1998), How Russia Really Works (2006) and Can Russia Modernize? (2013).
Alongside her academic work, she is a conceptual and visual artist who highlights phenomena of informal power and social complexity. In 2019 she participated in the parallel program of the 58th Venice Biennale, at Palazzo Donà, San Polo.
