Description
This carved serpentine (Cobalt stone) bust embodies elegance and strength through its striking depiction of an African woman. The sculpture captures attention with its serene expression and penetrating gaze, testifying to the skill of the artisan. The meticulous detail of the fabric enveloping her shoulders, combined with a subtly carved necklace, reveals remarkable cultural richness. The veining of the carefully polished serpentine block transforms the raw material into a work imbued with warmth and dignity. The natural hues of the piece accentuate the facial features and curves, lending depth and life to the work. This bust is not simply a tribute to feminine beauty, but also a powerful symbol of identity and tradition. Its perfect balance between simplicity and complexity distinguishes it as an exceptional example of African sculptural art.
Presentation
Emmanuel Chikumbirke was born in a rural area of northern Zimbabwe to Priscinia and Weston Chikumbirike, two farmers who are now deceased. From a young age, he lived with his brothers Abraham, Thomas, and Gladmore, who were also sculptors.
In fact, the Chikumbirike clan is very numerous, the majority being sculptors. Most specialize in busts.
In 1993, after passing his matriculation examinations at the University of Zimbabwe, he graduated with a first-class honours degree in economics.
Since 1994, he has been both a professor of economics and mathematics and a part-time sculptor.
In 2001, he established his own workshop after learning from his brothers and focused on human busts.
In 1994, he married Loveness, a very kind and wonderful woman who is his strength and his partner. They have three sons, Takudzwa, Munashe, and Almaz.
His works are appreciated and sold in Australia, the United States, South Korea and many European countries.
