Description

This captivating sculpture presents an abstract humanoid figure, epitomizing timeless elegance through its minimalist style. Crafted from marble, it stands out for its bold simplicity. The head, devoid of distinctive features, rises proudly atop an elongated neck, evoking a sense of contemplation. The shoulders are adorned with a textured olive-green collar, adding a subtle touch of color. The flowing robe, accentuated by sculpted details similar to the collar, contributes to an impression of graceful movement. The stonework demonstrates exceptional technical mastery, harmoniously blending geometric forms and delicate curves. This work provokes reflection on identity and human essence, leaving a lasting impression on the viewer with its enigmatic beauty.

Presentation

Born in 1953 in the Venezuelan Andes, Iris Vargas studied at the School of Anthropology in Venezuela and the National School of Fine Arts in Caracas and Paris. She has lived and worked in the Paris region since 1979.

She sculpts marble and all kinds of stone directly, developing movement and contrast. Women are her favourite subject. Since 1991, her exploration of materials has led her to develop a personal style, which she calls 'Marbres Sauvages' (Wild Marbles). In this style, she creates a rhythm between the stability of the structures and the ingenious arrangement of mobile variations.

Thanks to her knowledge of stone, Iris Vargas has been called upon to participate in the restoration of historic monuments such as the Louvre, Les Invalides and the National Archives.

She exhibits regularly in France, at the Carrousel du Louvre, the Salon d'Automne, and the Jardin du Luxembourg, as well as abroad in Heidelberg, Germany, Switzerland, the Salon d'Automne, and XIAN in China. She has been listed in the Bénezit catalogue since 1999.
