Vintage music matchboxes, 2026

Sumit Mehndiratta   New & remarkable Artists

This wall sculpture transforms musical history into a geometric puzzle. Small squares arrange themselves in a precise diamond formation. Each cell displays a legendary album cover. The composition blends nostalgia with modern precision.
The artist employs a rich variety of materials. Inkjet prints on paper meet acrylic and plywood. This mixed media approach creates a tactile depth. It elevates simple objects into a sophisticated cultural archive.
The layout evokes the feeling of a curated collection. It celebrates the visual identity of sound. Familiar imagery from rock and pop icons emerges from the grid. The neutral, textured background provides a warm contrast to the colorful miniatures.
This artwork functions as both a visual map and a rhythmic sequence. It explores the intersection of graphic design and fine art. The symmetry guides the eye toward the center. Each tiny image acts as a gateway to a specific era. The piece concludes with a singular portrait at the base, anchoring the entire structure.

This mixed media wall sculpture is inspired by music albums and records from the late 1980s, early 90s and even the 2000s. The artist's passion to use matchboxes as a background for these music records truly inspired this unique piece. The artwork has been treated to give a vintage, antique finish, also emphasizing the that music albums and CDs have become somewhat redundant after the digitalization of music. The vintage look is an exaggerated nod to analog albums and their place in history.
Crafted with plywood, found objects, and paper, this work is a modern collage with a touch of street art sensibilities. The artist's expressionistic style brings a vibrant energy to the subject of music, making it a captivating piece for any art lover.
The artwork is framed in a cream colored wooden frame with plexiglass and shipped safely secured in a wooden crate with Certificate of authenticity.
