Description

"Zulu" is a unique ceramic sculpture, inspired by the visual language and symbolic scope of ancient African objects related to fertility and rituals. The work transposes these historical references into a contemporary sculptural vocabulary, exploring the themes of ancestry, fertility, identity, ritual, and cultural memory.

Its totemic and elongated form is composed of a vertical succession of cylindrical and organic volumes, ending in a highly stylized human head. The fragmented features of the face and the simplified anatomy evoke an archaic figure, while the superimposed structure recalls both a ritual object and an imaginary archaeological artifact.

The surface plays a central role in the work. Hand-applied ceramic elements, incisions, irregular textures, and contrasting touches of black, white, and deep blue give the piece a deliberately raw and patinated appearance. The tension between the light ceramic body and the dark interventions gives the sculpture a strong graphic presence, while the irregularity of the surface evokes erosion, accumulation, and the passage of time.

Rather than reproducing a precise historical artifact, Grant transforms his source of inspiration into an autonomous contemporary sculpture. "Zulu" reflects his broader interest in the way cultural forms endure through transformation, preserving traces of collective memory while acquiring new meanings in the present.

A singular sculptural work intended for collectors sensitive to contemporary ceramics, cultural heritage, references to primitive and archaeological art, as well as a form of expressive art centered on the object.
