Description
This console which combines animal sculpture and furniture plays with perspective and structure.
The contrast of materials is ravishing. The natural and warm veining of the oak wood opposes the granular texture of the bronze which catches the light and emphasizes the rounded volumes.
The work relies on a precise balance. The head, upright and proud, seems to watch over the space. This approach transforms the art object into a hybrid element, between sculpture and furniture.
The whole evokes the sculptures of the first civilizations. These simplifications of forms that fascinated 20th-century artists such as Picasso. Dominique Pouchain adds elegance and strength to it.
Presentation
Dominique Pouchain is a French artist born in 1956. He started his apprenticeship in 1973 at his parents workshop, Jacques and Rolande Pouchain. His father is a ceramist and painter, his mother a decorator. He enrolled as a craftsman in the Chambre des Métiers in 1977 and started creating utilitarian pottery.
Very soon, he started working on his first animal sculptures. The oxide that he uses is one of the peculiarities of his work, his signature. He creates pieces in deep, matte black that absorbs light.
