Sakharayya, le tailleur de pierres precieuses, Guelma, 2024

Andy Berrend

This artwork, clearly rooted in the Cubist style, stands out for its bold and deconstructed depiction of a human face. Angular lines and geometric shapes dominate the composition, creating an image that is both dynamic and disconcerting. The color palette, which mixes vibrant tones of green, pink, purple, and blue, gives the work a palpable energy. Note the masterful use of exaggerated proportions: the eye is disproportionate to the face and almost seems to detach itself from the frame, providing an intriguing focal point. The thick, black outlines accentuate the facial features, giving them a marked expressiveness and heightening the emotion conveyed by the work. The visible texture of the painting suggests the use of oil pastels, adding a tactile dimension to the piece and reinforcing the impression of movement. The green background, although simple, serves to highlight the complexity of the face and adds a contrasting depth. As a whole, the work captures the essence of Cubist artistic audacity, playing with perspectives and forms to offer an unconventional and provocative vision of the human figure. It is a perfect example of how art can challenge and expand traditional perceptions of beauty and harmony.
