Peka & Jad, l'enfant du désert, Tamanrasset, 2024

Andy Berrend

This dynamic and expressive artwork captivates with its bold blend of vivid colors and asymmetrical forms. Dominated by a deconstructed face, it bears the distinctive marks of a modern Cubist style. The disproportionate eyes in shades of turquoise and green seem to gaze intensely at the viewer, breaking the boundary between the artwork and the external world. The facial features are an intriguing assembly of curves and angular lines, creating a hypnotic mosaic. Under a wide forehead adorned with geometric patterns, the sinuous, central nose fluidly connects the elements of the painting. The lips, in striking red, are voluminous and defined, adding a touch of sensuality to the composition. The contrast of textures and shades is masterfully handled to convey visual depth. In the upper left corner, an explosion of yellow suggests a light or a bright idea, lending a dreamlike dimension to the image. The stylized clothing in purple and orange, with refined details, harmonizes with the face while asserting its own presence. This piece offers the viewer a rich and complex visual experience, inviting reflection on the multiplicity of identities and self-perception. It is a celebration of visual diversity and a bold challenge to traditional portrait conventions.
