Art as a Political Tool

The artist, as a faithful observer of today's world, translates, externalizes and materializes his emotions to open a dialogue with the general public. Different periods of history and their multiple conflicts and protests have given birth to a good number of creations tinged with a strong political message. Therefore, new forms of political action and social criticism have diversified the artistic field.

Art as a political tool takes on its full meaning in the contemporary world, as every word and gesture of political leaders is highly mediatized. Uninhibited globalization since the 1980s and the rise of new technologies at the dawn of the 2000s have allowed for a massive diffusion of both things that have been said and works of art.

The consumption of art via a multitude of new and increasingly global channels, such as the cinema or social networks, has made this type of art more accessible. Once addressed to intellectuals and private circles, it is now within reach for the whole world.

But political art, like the issues it tries to bring to light, is multifaceted. The artist who is part of a political process can communicate a message in different forms. They can choose traditional or more original mediums or between figurative or subjective representation...

Indeed, paintings, sculptures and photographs can be real means of persuasion. Implemented to propagate an opinion, ideology or to trigger the adoption of behaviors within the public, these works belong to the very concept of art as propaganda.

Less authoritarian, engaged art defends a cause and takes a stand on a problem without trying to persuade its audience. It can be found being used to help several political-social causes (feminism, struggles against minority discrimination...). But also in various artistic movements, such as cubism, notably in Pablo Picasso's work, as well as in Pop Art and street art.

Finally, political art can be similar to an action of mediation, aiming to facilitate the circulation of information, or what we call the art intervention. This form of art (a branch of political art), uses the sociological environment as its source by integrating itself in the public space.

The art intervention does not try to inflict any moralizing logic. It is not a question of imposing an ideology. Instead it questions today's society, while being established particularly in the streets. Between testimony and denunciation, street art allows a certain freedom of interpretation, encouraging reflection and peaceful awareness. JR, Banksy, Miss Tic... There are countless politically active street artists.

Can we combine the history of art and political science? Many works have played a decisive role in the political world. Each one, to varying degrees, has been able to influence certain social, ecological and economic problems... Art as a political factor has therefore changed the world's collective life and the perspectives of many institutions.

Artsper has selected for you some works by politically engaged artists who cannot be ignored. Starting with Shepard Fairey, known under the pseudonym OBEY, whose viral silkscreens in favor of Obama were a key factor in boosting popularity with the president. But also Mr. Brainwash, pop artist and major player in the urban art scene. His stencil and graffiti works, take joy in hijacking and desecrating highly glorified monuments with fantasy and humor. Don't wait any longer to discover these colorful works concealing a strong political message!
