Artwork location: Israel

This print was produced from a graphite, lnk, gouach  and black chalk drawing on paper. It is possible to view the drawing itself upon request. As the drawing itself is much larger and produced on a fragile support, this print was made. The original drawing is an invention based on clay sketches.

The image together with other prints on this page are studies for future compositions in clay and bronze. They are all drawn first with traditional drawing materials, e.g graphic, charcoal, black chalk as well as India ink and sepia. Some of them are later reworked with watercolor and gouache.

The original image was scanned and printed with black toner ink on cotton rag paper. Once a satisfactory print is made, the whole composition is once more reworked using the same materials applied on the original drawing.

"This compelling artwork is a study focusing on the human form with a masterful integration of light and shadow. The figure stands predominantly in the middle of the paper, exuding a sense of enigmatic presence. Rendered with a variety of bold, sweeping strokes juxtaposed with more delicate lines, the piece captures the raw essence of human anatomy without delving into explicit detail, highlighting the artist's keen understanding of form and proportion. The play of light across the figure creates an atmospheric depth, allowing the contours to emerge subtly from the dark background. The absence of facial features adds to the anonymity and universal nature of the piece, inviting viewers to project their interpretations and emotions onto the figure. This approach enhances the artwork's allure, making it not only a study of the human body but also a reflection on identity and existence. A unique aspect of this work is the visible texture and grain of the paper, which interacts with the charcoal to create an organic, almost ethereal quality. The roughness of the background contrasts sharply with the smoother strokes defining the body, emphasizing the tension between presence and void, solidity and ethereality. This dynamic composition encourages a meditative engagement, making the viewer ponder the interplay between temporality and the eternal human form."

Presentation

Ohad Ben-Ayala, b.1981 .

Lives and works in his studio in Tel-Aviv.

The sculptures presented on this profile reflect a decade of exploring bronze and other non ferrous metals as sculptural materials.

All of the works shown here at the moment were roughed out and modeled first (from nature or an invention) using another material – mostly water based clay or soft bee-wax.

Either way, more than one aspect of each work was always left unfinished, so it could be later resolved in the final metal it was cast in, and thus giving the metal more meaning than just a casting material.

This method was meant to find some middle way between the desire to create a single, unique and individual art piece – and at the same time develop multiple other versions, with all the possibilities offered by casting and re-casting each sculpture in different materials.

Traditional methods of chasing and repousse were combined with electric and pneumatic grinding, polishing, welding and soldering.

Various bronze alloys, aluminum and sometimes brass were cast using both sand casting and lost wax casting methods. With the founder's role limited to pouring the molten metal - Each sculpture is resolved and finished by the artist's own hands.
