Demanding and a perfectionist, Roger Decaux went so far as to invent tools when the market did not offer instruments that met his creative needs. Like, for example, these pencils in XXL formats that he used to create this work, whose intense consistency allowed him to apply the desired chromatic charge to his works.
With Roger Decaux the morphology of the characters is clearly drawn, but he breathes into them a movement such that they seem disarticulated. His figures, subject to contortions, give the impression of offering the multiple facets of a revealed personality. Without concession, the dazzlingness of his line, sometimes enhanced, sometimes softened by its solid colors, digs furrows in the depths of the beings represented to reveal their interiority.
Some nudes have suggestive poses but are devoid of eroticism. The flesh is exposed shamelessly, in color, sometimes revealing an intimacy that moves the viewer. The result is a work of rare intensity, never provocative and which always reveals the strength of the artist's desire to create.

Roger Decaux (29 nov 1919 à Dombasle sur Meurthe – 19 nov 1995 à Nancy)
Literate and pedagogue, Roger Decaux trained in art history and philosophy. He was a teacher, wrote press articles in the art and philosophy sections, and was an art critic. He lived for a long time in Paris where he rubbed shoulders with many artists, participated in artistic and philosophical programs and magazines as well as taught art history and led workshops. He was very close to the painter Gino Severini. But what has mainly marked his life is his ability to put his open and cultivated mind at the service of his creativity. Winner of numerous prizes: Galilée Prize, Stanislas Academy Prize in Nancy and Trio Prize from the Belgian Ministry of Culture, he has translated into his work an enlightened and corrosive vision of our society. Its notoriety goes far beyond the national framework. If we can see his works in museums in France: museums of Nancy and Saint-Dié where a room is dedicated to him, he is also in many museums abroad: museums of Berlin, Amsterdam, Antwerp, from Indiana in the United States. He also produced frescoes for the church of Neuchâtel in Switzerland and for the Faculty of Letters in Mexico City. His works have been exhibited all over the world: Lyon, Paris, Menton, Metz, Aix-en-Provence, Limoges, Troyes, Strasbourg, Gothenburg, Munich, Venice, Karlsruhe, Düsseldorf, Brussels, Amsterdam, Geneva , Montreal, Tokyo, New York, San Francisco, Miami, Ghent, Pittsburgh, Indiana, Rennes, Rouen, Lille, Le Touquet.
