Biography
Puru, also known as Pu Xinyu, was a traditional Chinese calligrapher and painter, born in Beijing in 1896. A nobleman, scholar and a Manchu prince, Xinyu did not seek to be declared an artist. However, he is nowadays famous for his delicate artistry combining ink sketches and calligraphic notations.
As a cousin of Puyi, the last Emperor of China, he was one of the primary candidates to take over the throne, but after the fall of the Qing dynasty in 1911, he left for Berlin and later retreated to a Buddhist monastery in the Western Mountains, where he developed his artistic skills and passed his knowledge to students.
