Wonderful fresh sketch in red ink on an ivory-colored paper, with an autograph dedication "Per Pino Fasio amicia Pittore Wifredo Lam Albissola 1970". Dated and signed in red ink. Very good conditions, including jute passepartout and wooden frame. Some stains on the passepartout, while the frame is slightly damaged on the margins. The artwork is as good as new.

Wifredo Lam (Sagua la Grande, 1902 – Paris, 1982). Together with René Portocarrero, Lam is not only the major artist in Cuba, but also the first artist of color of art historiography. He was a member of the movement “Niggerism". Lam’s style is the result of his habitual travels: primitive graffiti with clear Cubist influences in a Surrealist mood. By now artist of international fame, Lam tried to combine Paris, the city of his adoption, with Cuba, his native country, where he followed political happenings closely, and with Albissola Marina in Italy, a town chosen with his family as a peaceful place. Today, some of the artist’s works belong to the Tate Gallery's collections in London, some to the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, some to the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and some to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

Famous artist

Wifredo Lam

Biography
Wifredo Lam was born in 1902 in Sagua la Grande (Cuba). He studied Law before leaving his island in 1923 for Spain.

Wifredo Lam joined the Artcollege of Madrid where he would work in the painter Fernando Alvarez de Sotomayor’s atelier. His first personal exhibition was organized in 1928. The work of Wifredo Lam was in its halfcaste history (China, Africa, and the Antilles). The artist was notably inspired by Africans who brought in Cuba "their primitive culture, their magic religion, and its mystic aspect".

During the Spanish civil war, Wifredo Lam fought for the republicans. He was obliged to take refuge in France in 1937; there, he met Picasso who helped him to find his place in the Parisian artistic environment and introduced him to his friends (Michel Leiris, Paul Eluard, Tristan Tzara, Léger, Braque, Miro, Christian Zervos, Matisse, etc.). In 1939, he joined André Breton and the surrealist movement.

Wifredo Lam died in Paris in 1982. According to the painter’s will, his ashes were transferred in Cuba, where was created in posthumous honoring, the "Centre Wifredo Lam" for the promotion and the study of the Third World-Plastic Arts.
