Color explosion

The use of color is a central element of any artist's work. It is a vital component, without which the work of art could not exist. With the passing of time and artistic movements, the uses and meanings attributed to color have evolved, from the mixing of pigment to the harmony of the painting and even works whose key theme is color.

Color manipulation is a learning process that every artist must master in order to access the infinite variations of color. The restoration of paintings is a science that requires a molecular knowledge to work out the colors and mixtures used by the original artist. Throughout the history of art, colors have taken on various meanings: white is the color of purity and chastity, gold of wealth and nobility, blue of justice and wisdom and red of strength and courage. These connotations are still present in our conception of colors today. Additionally, colors can be divided into three categories: warm, cool and neutral tones. As their names suggest, these categories of color exude an atmosphere that painters try to convey in their work.

The master manipulation of color in Baroque art juxtaposes warm and cool colors to capture the power of the human form. The impact of the colors is elevated by the effects of the light. Originally, artists tried to replicate the colors of their surrounding environment, remaining faithful to the colors of reality. Then came the Impressionists who only used primary and complementary colors, and did not mix them at all. Even the shadows were portrayed by bright colors, only becoming shadows in the eye of the spectator alone, thus introducing a special relationship between the work and the viewer.

During that period, color was still an indispensable tool for artists. In addition to being their working medium, it is also what allowed them to highlight their art, playing on perceptions, shadows, contours and light. It represented the very essence of their art without it ever being the primary focus of a piece. It is not until subjective, abstract paintings came along, that artists began to devote themselves to color rather than a physical subject. Mondrian worked with the approach of evoking the very essence of nature through the purity of primary colors to achieve abstraction. Equally, the founder of the Russian avant-garde Suprematism movement Malevitch, disturbed everyone's senses with Suprematist Composition: White on White. He abandoned convention to reach a pure pictorial sensibility where the portrayal of color is purely for its own purpose. Whereas, Rothko, a precursor of Color Field and Abstract Expressionism movements, saw his paintings as living organisms whose color had a human quality that transcended the format.

Contemporary art, photography, collage and Pop Art also explore the seemingly infinite possibilities of color. As Picasso once said: 'when I don't have blue, I use red'. In this collection Artsper presents a color filled theme of intense, saturated tones to fight against the monotony of the everyday.
