You probably know Kasimir Malevich’s « White on White », considered as the first contemporary monochromatic painting, or even Yves Klein’s famous monochrome series of blue, a color he copyrighted under the name « International Klein Blue ».

Monochrome works serve 2 objectives : reaching total abstraction and/or reducing painting and sculpture to their visual aspect in order to focus only on the physical elements such as texture, form or color.

It is one of the main components of art from the 1950s and 60s. In their reflection on matter, artists like Robert Ryman or Pierre Soulages used monochrome without even really wanting to. At each artistic advance, monochrome was able to adapt and stay an essential tool in redefining art.

Monochrome art has met great success and had its fair share of celebrities. It remains a topic that contemporary artists revive.
