nuit

La nuit, sujet mystérieux et infini qui fascine les artistes à travers les âges. Tout d'abord la lune, enchanteresse, rattachée à l'archétype féminin, souvent personnification de la féminité. Puis les étoiles filantes ou immobiles, innombrables dans le ciel, petites touches de lumière, témoins d'un éclat éternel de l'au-delà. Enfin, l'obscurité, l'assombrissement opaque lorsque le soleil va se coucher. Le ciel nocturne et la nuit étoilée ne sont pas des univers réservés aux noctambules. Ce phénomène qui rythme notre vie, banal et littéralement quotidien reste une source inépuisable d'inspiration pour les artistes qui n'ont de cesse de l'observer pour mieux le transmettre.

Parmi eux, le photographe français Roger Schall qui profite de l'apparition du Leica et du Rolleiflex à la fin des années '20 pour s'intéresser aux photos prises sur le vif. Contemporain de Doisneau, Brassaï ou encore Cartier-Bresson, il se fait rapidement remarquer par les grands patrons de la presse et son petit studio de photographe se transforme rapidement en véritable agence photographique qui diffuse dans les magazines du monde entier. Il travaille de nuit et Paris la nuit, devient son sujet d'exploration favori. En adoptant un point de pris de vue neutre, il laisse son appareil se concentrer sur la ville elle-même. Des ruelles oubliés aux enseignes de magasins et monuments, les nuits parisiennes sont immortalisées par le photographe.
