Description
Yazid Oulab is a multi-facetted artist and a man with an old soul. His practice seems to be informed by centuries of rich and diverse civilizations. He is an interpreter and a messenger capable of analyzing and translating into simplified objects millennia of cultural, social and spiritual history.

He is a craftsman who is in love with the gesture, a fascinated and fascinating poet for whom the gaze generates meaning, a tireless witness and a potentially omniscient one. Yazid Oulab is the accomplished artist, a man who, far from the excesses of today’s society, would always be ready to sacrifice his newly gained fame to art .

His works – objects, installations, sculptures and videos – represent tools of expression and communication that encourage us to consider the plurality of our times and measure the historical influence of all things. Yazid Oulab is much more than an artist, he is a story-teller. He is a guide and a philosopher and he helps us discover or rediscover the origins of writing, numbers, spirituality, religions or Nations. Yazid Oulab is an artist or a frontier who creates connections, as the nail does; the nail is a recurrent element in his work.

This reference to cuneiform writing appears in many of his works though nails (Alif). Yazid Oulab’s work on writing is also marked by Mektoub, an artwork that consists of one word symbolizing the power of destiny; this work tries to capture the essence of human culture and nature.
This edition of 8 from the LOFT Gallery represents the barbed wire works of the artist sublimated by the finish of the stainless steel wire that brings a new brilliance and permanence to the pieces.

Presentation

Yazid Oulab was born in 1958 in Constantine, Algeria.

His father was a mechanic, his mother a French teacher, and he is the nephew of writer Kateb Yacine.

As a teenager, he was in contact with the intellectual scene in his uncle's home. At the age of 22 he decided to study art and was accepted at the Beaux-Arts School in Algiers. Almost 6 years later, he moved to Marseilles and he was accepted at the Luminy Art School. He worked on construction sites in order to pay his studies, and he became familiar with techniques that helped him a lot in his practice.

In 2008, he was featured in the exhibition Les Traces du Sacré (“Traces of the Sacred") at the Musée National d'Art Moderne, Centre Pompidou, and he was a resident at the Calder studio from February to July 2009. In 2013, he has been chosen to inaugurate the new headquarters of the FRAC PACA in Marseille, with the occasion of Marseille's year as a European Capital of Culture.
