Cameroon • 1996
Presentation
Noumbiboo Leuna (1996) studied for 5 years at the Kongsamba School of Fine Arts from which she
graduated in 2019 with a master's degree in painting and video. She then participated in several group
exhibitions while continuing her research in the studio of Hervé Youmbi. In 2018, spotted by
Barthélémy Toguo, she participates in Woman Power exhibition at the famous Bandjoun station. She
subsequently exhibited several times at Doual'art, the inescapable space directed by Princess Marilyn
Douala Bell.
She also participated in the first edition of Doualart'Fair, where she presented a series of
fragmented portraits on the beginning of a crisis that continues to mark the country. In 2021, she won
the first prize « Jeune espoir » of thePascale Marthine Tayou competition, and was awarded a twomonth residency with Hervé Youmbi, as well as a three-month residency with Justine Gaga in
Bonendale. 2021 also saw her first solo exhibition at the French Institute in Yaoundé.
Through a game between collage and acrylic on canvas, the skin of Noumbimboo Leuna's characters
reveals the imprint of flora and fauna. Each fragment of paper is a metamorphosis of pieces of flesh
that, one on top of the other, live to the rhythm of the construction of a new identity. The artist
transforms landscapes into human entities in search of unexpected textures.
Her chromatic palette,
navigating between warm and cold colors, as well as the carefully generated accidents, suggest the
ambivalence of a primitive world evolving between softness and aggressiveness. Intimately linked to
Man, the composition echoes the various physical and psychological wounds at a time when the
young generation is already suffering the wrath of climate change and the excesses of urbanization.
Noumbimboo Leuna explores the fusion of the human body and nature to highlight the value and
beauty of a nature to be preserved. His collages become so many random reconstructions evoking the
sacred link between living beings and the earth that welcomes and nourishes them.
