Biography
Born in 1964, Zeng Fanzhi is a celebrated Chinese painter. He studied at the Hubei Institute of Fine Arts.
Although Fanzhi's earliest works were large-scale abstract paintings, he started to create pieces in response to the perceived superficiality of urban life after moving to Beijing.
His 1996 painting Mask Series 1996 No.6 sold for 7.5 million dollars in 2008 setting an auction record. In 2020 the same painting was resold for approximately $23 million.
Retrospectives of Fanzhi's works have taken place in Hong Kong (2011), Paris (2014), London (2018) and Zürich (2018).
