Biography

Firelai Baez is a visual artist from the Dominican Republic. Born in 1981, Baez graduated with an MFA from Hunter College in New York City before pursuing a career as a multimedia painter. The work of Baz is characterized by deeply imaginative, somewhat wistful depictions of human figures. These portrayals are often layered atop reworked historical manuscripts, excerpts from old maps which the artist has found.

She develops a complex, layered pictorial practice in which she questions dominant historical narratives, erased memories, and colonial legacies, particularly those linked to the Caribbean and the Afro-descendant diaspora. Her compositions combine painting, drawing, and mixed media techniques, incorporating motifs of cartography, vegetation, architecture, and hybrid cultural symbols.

Her work has been exhibited in galleries and exhibitions in both her native Dominican Republic, and across the globe, including a feature at New York City's Museum of Modern Art.
