Hélène Laxenaire (SURFIL)

France

Biography

A visual artist for around thirty years, Hélène Laxenaire, aka Surfil, works in a wide variety of artistic fields, ranging from graphic illustration to animated images, including mural and theatrical decor. Moving images are at the heart of her work.

From her meeting with Jean Faucheur in 2002, Hélène Laxenaire developed a completely original urban approach to her work. In collaboration with the Une nuit collective, an alternative product of the “arts et toits" squat, she tackled the creation of 4x3m advertising posters that she visualized as screenshots and implemented in the street. The idea of considering the framework of these formats as a cinematic canvas pushed her to create series of large-format posters, the drawings of which follow one another in a huge urban “frame by frame".
