Oluwasegun Joseph (b.1993) is a contemporary Nigerian artist in Lagos. He has a passion for drawing cartoons, portraits, and comics at a young age and has worked with noticeable publishing houses in Nigeria; Lantern books, GNO studio, IC studio, ink Design studios, Cerebre, and Magic Carpet. Trained at Universal Studios of Art and a graduate of Painting at the faculty of Art and Design, Yaba College of Technology (Polytechnic). Oluwasegun has participated in various group exhibitions; Nosacreative(online exhibition 2020), Final year exhibition (2019), Nigeria Student Art Competition ( NSAC) O.A.U. 2018. Recently he participated in the Harlem Fine Art Show(HFAS) in New York(U.S.A) for Black history month (2023). His works are featured in digital exhibitions on Opensea and also in private collections.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Black excellence is the Celebration of success in the black community. However black excellence goes beyond achieving or highlighting individual achievements. It is a mindset backed by actions that display leadership through perseverance. This trait can be seen in the act of past and present leaders in all areas of life. Angela Davies, Dora Akinyuli, Armanda Gorman, Nelson Mandela, Ngozi Chimamanda Adichie. This body of works, through the use of digital tools and traditional approaches, depicts information using significant symbols and attires from the Yoruba “Aso Oke", with the merging of the Igbo Nsibidi and the Ghanian Adinkra. Metaphorically, the flower, leaves, and long neck signify beauty and growth in the black community. There is light if only we're brave enough to see it and this should serve as a form of encouragement to every person out there to be courageous enough to celebrate their small wins, no matter how small it is, a win is a win.
