Biography
Victor Nicolaiev's painting has a special place in the postmodern experience of what is known as "non official Sovietic art". It would not be correct to consider Nicolaiev's work a manifestation of neo-traditionalism and label it lyrical abstraction. His art is not the result of the artistic gesture of a loner or an epigone.
We notice in Victor Nicolaiev's compositions from the '70s and early '80s reminiscences of the plastic discoveries of lyrical abstraction, be it by Pollock, Mathieu, Michaux or Soulages. His works are characterized, though, by originality and "regional" specificity.
